Mohawk College Bursary, HamiltonWhen Bill Barr (former Villa resident) passed away he donated part of his estate to St. Joseph’s Villa in Dundas and Mohawk College.  Bill made the gift to thank the Villa for his family’s care.  Bill’s wife Agnes became a resident at the Villa in 2003.  In 2005, Bill and his daughter also moved to the Villa.

The gift to Mohawk College was to support and establish a Bursary specifically for students taking programs that may lead to employment at St. Joseph's Villa (or similar healthcare facility).  Preference will be given to applicants who are connected with the Villa, i.e. having done clinical placement here, etc.  Programs such as RPN, PSW, Social Work, and Recreation Therapy will qualify.

Bill, who had worked as a Stationary Engineer maintaining boilers at Westinghouse, managed to build a nest egg through shrewd investing and careful saving.  Bill and Agnes wanted to ensure their daughter, who had a learning disability and hearing impairment, would always be provided for.

Agnes passed away in January of 2008.  Six months later, Eleanor suffered a stroke and died unexpectedly on Christmas Eve.  Bill passed away in June 2009.

“They were always so thankful for the care they received here and for the opportunity for Eleanor to enjoy a really good life here,” said Beverley Greenwood, Chaplain at the Villa.  “It became their home, and we became their family.  Certainly they became an extension of ours as well.”
