Orchid Garden – 12 Bed Project Completed

In January 2015, the 12 bed project was completed and became a new Resident Home area at the Villa increasing the number of long term care home beds from 378 to 390.

The vision for “Orchid Garden” began as a partnership between St. Joseph’s Health System, the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care by approving the transfer of 12 bed licences that were housed at the Motherhouse from 2005 to 2010 to St. Joseph’s Villa.

The Villa had the space available to renovate, preliminary construction costs for the project and an enthusiastic Foundation Board and staff ready to raise the needed funds to make this a reality. The Villa Foundation’s campaign was “Building Today…Changing Tomorrows” and reached and exceeded the target.

When beds have been removed from the community, it’s wonderful that St. Joseph’s Health System can replace a fraction of those beds. Changes in health care requirements for an aging population with very diverse needs have created tremendous challenges. For more than 135 years St. Joseph’s Villa has been evolving to meet those needs, and provide quality, specialized care for those most vulnerable.

This project satisfies a critical need for more long term care beds in the community. It provides immediate relief for twelve more families who are struggling to provide that care for their loved ones. Every resident is treated with love, affection, personal attention and kindness.
